Responsible for most of the region’s transport services, Auckland Transport covers everything from roads and footpaths, to cycling, parking and public transport.
The underground City Rail Link (CRL) is the key project in an integrated transport programme, designed to open up Auckland’s rail network. Communicating with the public as part of the resource consent process was hampered by lengthy technical reports describing the route and proposed construction sequences. With Auckland’s population expected to grow by more than 700,000 during the next 30 years, progressing the project was to vital to meet this increased demand.
Using the ‘Digital Auckland’ model as a base, we created a full 3D representation of the proposed CRL route. Existing and proposed networks, new station locations and depths, and potential travel-time savings were integrated within the model. Converting complex technical reports and maps into 3D, the public were able to easily navigate and understand all facets of the project – from the Lower Albert Street ‘cut & cover’ construction process, to traffic management and timeframes in the Resource Management Act hearings.
Through the 3D visualisation of the proposed CRL, Auckland Transport were able to clearly and effectively explain concepts, demonstrate processes, and communicate benefits to public and legal entities. Enhanced public consultation and increased understanding led to more informed stakeholders and encouraged public buy-in.
"The construction visualisation was a key tool in helping the planning commissioners’ understand how we intended to manage construction while allowing traffic access along one of Auckland’s key city arterials. It enabled a much more informed and focussed discussion and the commissioners commented positively on how useful it was and appreciated our effort to have it made."
