RungePincockMinarco (RPM) is the world’s largest publicly-listed independent group of mining technical experts. With history stretching back to 1968, they have local expertise in all mining regions and are experienced across all commodities and mining methods. 

The problem

Mining data is generally housed in proprietary formats, making it time-consuming and costly to access and interpret. Profitable and efficient operation relies on a comprehensive view of this information, including bore hole explorations, geological extrapolation, mineral extraction and processing, the changing terrain, and the position of trucks and equipment. 

The solution

A proof of concept showed how SAP Visual Enterprise could process and interpret the huge volume of data and metadata generated from the industry standard application, Maptek Vulcan BlockAgg. A custom plugin for SAP Visual Enterprise Generator was developed to automatically generate VDS format models. Using SAP Visual Enterprise Author, mine data was also aggregated and presented in interactive 3D models.


Continually updated with new data, the 3D model-centric visualisations can be used in training, tracking the extracted assets, and the daily status of mining machinery. The solution also improves efficiency by allowing informed forward planning. Regular updates of the mine topology can be visually compared with the planned work, reducing delays, schedule changes and safety concerns.
